What is domestic violence? It is the harm suffered because of physical and/or emotional abuse. There are many myths surrounding domestic violence. These myths hide the truth about abusive situations.

¡@

Myth 1: Domestic violence only occurs in families from a lower economic or low education background.

Fact: Domestic abuse can occur in any family regardless of economic status or educational background.

¡@

Myth 2: The victim of the abuse is to blame ¡X she "made the abuser angry" by something she did or didn't do.

Fact: The victim is not responsible for abuse. If a husband hits his wife, then he is responsible for the abuse. There is no "reason" or "excuse" for violent behavior.

¡@

Myth 3: The abuse will stop if certain outside conditions change such as getting married, finding a better job, or if the abuser stops drinking.

Fact: Domestic violence is not a "temporary loss of control" and there is no "reason" or "excuse" for it. Domestic violence is not acceptable behavior under any conditions.

¡@

Myth 5: Only women are abused

Fact: Domestic violence can happen to men as well as women, but most victims are female.
