¡@
Survivors of sexual
abuse can suffer a range of short-term and long-term problems related to
the abuse.
¡@
Short-term physical
problems can include bruising, swelling or tearing of the genitals as
well as other parts of the body. Injury can occur to internal organs as
well, affecting later reproductive health or could result in pregnancy.
An assault can also result in infection of a sexually transmitted
disease.

As well as physical
injuries, survivors often have strong feelings of fear, shame, guilt and
betrayal.
They might suffer
depression, lack of self-esteem, anger and hostility, or be emotionally
cool and distant.
¡@
Survivors can suffer
other strong and often
conflicting emotions as a result of the abuse. They might display severe
mood swings or inappropriate emotional responses, they could resort to
drinking or drugs or have suicidal thoughts.
¡@
Survivors might have
trouble sleeping or have nightmares, especially if the assault happened
at night.
