US State Department notes local efforts on human trafficking

Interim report released

The US State Department Interim report on human trafficking was released in January, and notes some improvements for Taiwan. The reports includes the new ban on "international marriage firms" in an effort to stop the trafficking of women through fake marriages. It also notes that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has more screening of women applying for a visa through marriage, and that there has been a drop in the number of these kinds of visa.

However, the report also notes that authorities in Taiwan did not prosecute any offenses of trafficking for forced labor or domestic servitude. Read the full report here: http://www.state.gov/g/tip/rls/rpt/78948.htm

Impressed with services for single mothers in London

Late last year, a GOH staff member had the opportunity to accompany a fact-finding trip to London, to study the services available to single mothers. She was very impressed with what she saw. In particular, the services in London offered a "one-stop" approach for women who needed assistance - from housing, to health, to legal aid, to employment assistance. Here in Taiwan, the GOH service centers try to follow this model, but we hope to learn from this approach in London, and offer fully integrated services in the future.
