Domestic Violence
cases and the GOH
Government figures on cases of domestic
violence have been increasing every year, and some people ask what is
behind this sudden increase in the number of cases. The real question
is: Are there more cases of domestic violence, or is it that more
people are reporting cases?
¡@
We hope that the higher number of reports
mean that more people are reporting violence, and seeking help, rather
than more violent incidents occurring.
¡@
The Garden of Hope has been raising
awareness on family violence for many years,
and was at the center of calls for a specific law on domestic violence
in the 1990s, as well as subsequent laws on assault and harassment.
Even now that the laws are in place, we still work to make sure
support services are available, as well as raise public awareness, and
encourage more people to seek help.
¡@
In 2005, GOH service centers provided help
in more than 2,000 cases, our shelters saw more than 150 cases, and
our follow up services registered some 700 cases.
¡@
The GOH is proud to continue its work to end
family violence in our homes, and thanks you for your continued support
of the Garden of Hope
Foundation!

Correction for
the September newsletter: The figures for 2005 direct services
to single mothers should have read "services to more than 200 young unwed

Thank you for your help!
Last month, we
asked for donations of baby items to help some of our youngest clients
¡X the infants in our shelters for single mothers. In a wonderful bit of
serendipity, the kind folks at the American Institute in Taiwan contacted us around the same time to offer donations of
just those items. They got together a wonderful assortment of baby
clothes, and a baby stroller, all of which will be welcome gifts
for the young mothers in the program, or will be used in the shelters.

Also last month,
long-time Taipei resident and friend of the Garden of Hope, Mr. Geoff
Spencer, said goodbye to Taiwan and made a parting gift of household
goods to the GOH. Geoff returned to his homeland, but not before
donating a large variety of very useful goods. From refrigerators, to
televisions, to microwaves, the goods will be used in two new GOH centers in Taoyuan
and Taipei County. Thank you and happy trails, Geoff!
