GOH's CEO named as a finalist in a major child development award

¡@

The Garden of Hope's CEO, Ms. Hui-jung Chi, has been named one of three finalists in a major international development award to be announced in November, 2005 in New York. Ms. Chi, who has led the GOH for more than 13 years, is the first person from Taiwan to be named as an honoree in the highly coveted ¡§Kellogg¡¦s Child Development Award,¡¨ which will be presented at a gala ceremony in New York on November 10, 2005.

¡@

Ms. Chi is ¡§over the moon¡¨ about the nomination, and praised the organizers ¡V the World of Children ¡V for their work to recognize child rights¡¦ activists.

¡@

¡§This is wonderful for the Garden of Hope, and all the NGO¡¦s in Taiwan. But, it¡¦s more than that ¡V it¡¦s for all the people helping children in our region and around the world. I¡¦m very honored and grateful,¡¨ Ms. Chi said.

¡@

The Kellogg¡¦s Child Development Award is made each year to individuals at the forefront of child welfare internationally. Ms. Chi was named one of three honorees, which in turn had been selected from some 190 entrants from around the world.

¡@

The award carries one cash prize of US$100,000 (for the major winner), and two prizes of US$10,000 each for the other finalists. Regardless of the final result in November, Ms. Chi plans to donate any prize money to the Garden of Hope¡¦s children¡¦s services.

¡@

¡§We have so many services for children ¡V counseling for kids who have suffered abuse, shelters, social work support for disadvantaged families, as well as prevention programs. We do our best with what we have, but it seems our resources are always behind our needs.

¡@

¡§We always help as many children as we can, so any extra funds mean helping more children. This would be a great boost to help us help our kids,¡¨ Ms. Chi said.

Thank you German Cultural Center

Thank you to the German Cultural Center for sharing their National Day celebrations with us by inviting the Garden of Hope to hold an activity for children at the center's Open Day.

There were lots of parents and kids on hand to  enjoy the fun day, and also learn more about child protection. Garden of Hope staff were there to read a story book introducing child protection, and the Center even provided a volunteer to read the book in German, too!

¡@

Our very grateful thanks to Taipei's Kaleidoscape Language Academy, which held a great activity for kids after the reading. All in all, a great day for kids, parents, and staff, too!
