Rave reviews for Vagina Monologues'

Taipei premiere

ˇ@

The Taiwan premiere of Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues" received rave reviews following its two performances at the Red House Theater in Hsimenting. Both the Chinese and English performances played to a packed house, with demand for tickets far surpassing availability.

ˇ@

"Their tone and movements and their face really expressed who they are. It was very natural - I felt like they [the actors] were talking about things that really happened to them," said one audience member.

ˇ@

"It was really funny," said another fan. "They could talk about things that people don't usually talk about. But, they looked as though they were thrilled to be up there on stage and really happy with the characters they were playing," he said.

ˇ@

The organizers also named four local "Vagina Warriors" before the start of performances on both nights. The Vagina Warrior award honors local women and men working to end violence against women and girls. The award winners were: Ms. Li-feng Lee from ECPAT Taiwan; Ms. Kris Carlson from the Community Services Center, Taipei; a posthumous award for women's rights activist Ms. Wan-ru Peng; and the Garden of Hope's own Ms. Sen Liu (see below).

Congratulations to all the cast and crew of Taipei's first "Vagina Monologues" on their great work!

The performances were organized by Ms. Betsy Lan, Ms. Dana Wylie, Ms. Lily Yang, the Garden of Hope, the Taiwan Association for the Promotion of Women's Rights, and the Taiwan Women's Link.

The World V-Day movement aims to raise awareness about violence against women. Proceeds from the performances are donated to the local women's organizations listed above. The Garden of Hope gratefully acknowledges the donation from the V-Day project.

Get involved for No-Hitting Day!

April 30th is No-Hitting Day in the USA - a day for parents, teachers and all adults to refrain from hitting their children for one day. It is a day to look for better ways to discipline children. It is a day for everyone to think about how to end corporal punishment of children.

ˇ@

Corporal punishment harms children, and it is not even very effective as a tool for discipline. A recent study from Canada showed that where parents often used physical punishment or yelled at their child, the child was more likely to develop bullying or other aggressive kinds of behavior.

ˇ@

Children are a precious gift. It is our job to help children learn to be responsible and well behaved.

Garden of Hope staff honored as "Vagina Warrior"

The Garden of Hope's Ms. Sen Liu, a residential worker at the shelter facility Lanxin House, has been named a "Vagina Warrior" in the awards celebrating Taipei's first performance of the Vagina Monologues.

ˇ@

ˇ§Ms. Liu has always been really sincere with clients, and always encourages them stand up and fight for their own rights,ˇ¨ said Ms. Liu's supervisor at the shelter facility.

ˇ@

Ms. Liu has worked as a residential worker at Lanxin House for two and a half years. She has been devoted to assisting women, who have suffered sexual abuse or domestic violence, to regain their own lives. Women who have been through these kinds of violent experiences are often less confident and more insecure, and need special care.

ˇ@

Ms. Liu said she believes a residential worker should be ˇ§active, but not aggressive; caring, but not intrusive,ˇ¨ so that the clients at Lanxin House can be helped both mentally and physically.

Congratulations Ms. Liu!
